The Nigerian singer Seyi Shay has disclosed the reason behind her decision to no longer attend her previous church.
She claimed that she took this action when a church leader suggested that the congregation go back to traditional Christian hymns and songs that “are direct scripture” instead of new-age gospel tunes.
While exploring African relatives, Shay claimed she could not understand why people like the church leader would be content to sing songs that were composed by “slave owners” and passed down through the years.
She emphasised that ignorance is not godly and advised Christians to learn traditional Christian hymns and songs before singing them.
“We need to stop singing all these new age gospel songs in praise and worship and go back to singing hymns and only songs that are direct scripture,” she stated on her Instagram story, quoting a leader from her previous church.
You know what? I no longer attend that church. Period. I’m not sure how or why singing some of the songs that slave masters composed and made their slaves sing over the generations while birthing and torturing your ancestors would make you feel fortunate and content. It doesn’t make sense. Investigate! It is not Godly to be ignorant!
