Herder-farmer conflicts are mostly the result of poor resource distribution, according to a Taraba politician

The primary reason for the ongoing conflicts between herders and farmers in Taraba State has been recognized as the desire for complete control over resource distribution.

Abubakar Tonko, a state House of Assembly member who represents the Takum I Constituency, made the remarks on Thursday while answering questions from reporters at the Wukari Local Government Council.

Tonko is now involving the residents of the many villages in the regions to support the efforts of Governor Agbu Kefas, who said that his constituency and the Takum Local Government Council as a whole are doing all in their power to prevent additional breaches of the peace.

He promised that ongoing clashes between the two groups will soon be a thing of the past after outlining the steps the new administration is taking to put an end to killings in the region and the state as a whole.

He added: “With the way this governor is going, we are expecting to see meaningful progress in the discussion around peace when it comes to the allocation of resources, especially land allocation.”

He also lauded the proactiveness of the governor, who, according to him, mobilized relief materials for the victims of the recent unrest that led to the wanton destruction of lives and properties.

“We appreciate the governor who heeded our call and provided relief materials to those displaced,” he stated.

He was also certain that the recently built 40 MW Kashimbilla Hydropower Station would generate employment possibilities, which would drastically lower young unrest in Taraba.
