Last three days were significant for Egyptians overseas as they lined up to vote in the December 1–3 presidential elections. The National Election Authority (NEA) has carefully scheduled 137 embassies and consulates in 121 countries to welcome voters from 9 am to 9 pm, guaranteeing maximum accessibility. Egyptians living abroad or temporarily travelling can vote with a valid or expired national ID card or passport with their national ID number.
With 14 million Egyptian overseas residents expected to vote, expectations are high. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, and Qatar have high voting rates, suggesting robust community participation.
Over 65 million adults, both domestic and foreign, can vote. The Egyptian local elections are scheduled on December 10–12, with the results released on December 18 if no run-off is needed.
Egypt’s presidential election has four contenders. The star represents incumbent President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s third term bid. Social Democratic Party candidate Farid Zahran carries the sun, Al-Wafd candidate Abdel-Sanad Yamama the palm tree, and People’s Republican Party candidate Hazem Omar the ladder.
Both Ahmed Tantawi and Gameela Ismail withdrew from this election due to not meeting the requirements. Tantawi’s campaign staff was detained for alleged election improprieties.
Egypt faces instability, economic mismanagement, and corruption throughout these elections. Due to controversial economic measures, the Egyptian pound’s volatility against the US dollar is a major concern. In line with an IMF lending programme, selling state assets to Gulf states aims to boost foreign currency reserves and relax economic control.
The nation’s economy has been overwhelmed by corruption charges and heavy borrowing, resulting to spending on projects like the New Administrative Capital.
As Egyptians overseas finish this crucial election, their involvement is vital. On the second day, voting rates rose, especially in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and several European countries.
Egypt’s election continues from December 10th to 12th, with results announced on December 18th if a run-off is needed.
